Since there are dangers with any gas stove, am wondering if there are any detectors (gas leak, smoke or fire) that will turn off the gas?

Did a quick search but found nothing.

Unvented ("vent free") heaters usually have a built in oxygen depletion sensor. Never heard of such a thing on vented ones, though. B-vent appliances have a "spill switch", which detects an overheat condition if the appliance isn't venting properly. Direct vent appliances have no communication between the flames and the room, so no such control is needed.
