Finally the ground froze so I was able to do a little cutting this am. Dropped an ash, dead of course, and took these 2 smaller trees as well. I'm pretty good at being able to identify wood in the winter time. Kinda know what its not and go from there. First few pics are of this wood thats as heavy as a rock. Reminded me of maple but its definitely not soft maple. I tap sugar maples in the early spring , but those trees are really mature. No smell, white chips and HEAVY!
Second tree has lots of those dang thorns, had to clear room for the ash otherwise it would have stayed. No smell either in this wood as I thought it maybe the thorny apple that sav has mentioned before. Anyway, nice morning, seen 3 deer, got some free wood, and drank hot coffee. Life is great!
