liner or clay flu?

Welcome to the forum Jesus freak. Nice name!

You know just by looking at the chimney. If you are up top, then just looking down will tell you. The worst spot will usually be right at the top but it still pays to look all the way if possible. One could always lower a video camera down and also tape or fasten a small flashlight to it for checking where you can't see well.

Take a photo of the inside & post it here! ;) Just kidding, don't do that or you'll probably end-up re-building your whole chimney!
You should be able to see the surface of the clay tiles or steel liner. No black glazing on them. It's a chimney so it's never really going to be "clean", but you want not accumulation of creosote in there at all.
