What are some inexpensive stoves that aren't junk?

I want to put a stove in my basement for occasional use -- when company comes and stays in the basement guest room, when it's really cold out, and when I'll be doing stuff down there in the winter. It doesn't matter what it looks like, but I want it to burn safe and clean.

Used stoves are an option, though I'm not sure I know enough to avoid something bad, and where I live there aren't really a lot of used stoves. Mostly Craig's List has really old stuff.

Englander
True North by PE
Timberwolf by Napoleon
Century
Drolet

timberwolf 2200. stove and pipe, total cost 735.00 existing chimney so no money there. We all end up in the basement to watch the fire when company comes over.

Theres a decent wiki article on buying used stoves, provided you dont mind a two hour drive, you can find some deals. Both of mine where used both newer and were in pretty good shape. Look or search for a particular brand, then folks here could help you with any details youd need.

Good luck

Englanders are very cheap, but are also very quality stoves from what I've heard here- alot of forum members have them!

Although not quite as cheap as Englander, you may also want to check out Lopi/Avalon's Republic/Spokane stove line.. they offer the "1250", which is a small stove, & the "1750" which is a medium-sized stove.

I also believe that Pacific Energy's "True North" line is relatively cheap.

You wouldn't go wrong with any of the stoves I just mentioned- they are all still very well build quality stoves.

I'm with stump on buying used. But the Northeast is abundant with used stoves. Good, used stoves might be harder to find in the South.

Depends on your budget, are we talking under $1k or under $500, if the latter you are going to be looking at used.

If the poster gets luck, you can occasionally find a new Englander 13 for $499 from Home Depot. That includes shipping.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm not in a hurry -- too many other projects. We do have the upstairs stove ordered though and they're coming to measure Saturday!

I don't really even have a budget for the basement -- it's just something we're wanting to do.

This craigslist ad is typical of what I see around here:

I don't think I'd want that if it was free. There are some decent stoves from time to time. Having a list of some of the lesser expensive new stoves will give me something to compare to.

I've been heating much of our place for over 35 yr. with a Shenandoah which cost us, new, less than $200. They are more than that now, but we love ours and would buy another should we ever need one.

I was trolling craigslist for 6 months looking for a small cheap EPA stove. It's pretty easy, just look for stoves that have glass in front. I bought an Englander 13NC for $420. It wasn't a great deal but it was better than freezing!

I bought my Napoleon 1900p with a blower 4 years ago from a bargain sheet for 800 bucks.....it was one year old and in perfect condition, was used only a handful of times.....did some quick research on it, but had to buy it fast the guy had four calls about it after I called, all in the same day.....after buying it I understood quickly why he didn't want the stove, he had a little tiny house and this stove probably cooked him out! It was way too much stove for his square footage, we have close to 3000 sq.ft., use it all winter long, day in and day out, and it heats our house with no problem.....so make sure you look in the trader's guides/bargain sheets, etc.....but try to stay with a CAT stove/EPA stove.....they are very efficient!

Lol thats about the only type of stove that hits our local craigslist also. I envy the people who can find awesome deals on great used stoves as it just doesnt happen in our area.

start watchin the states up north (PA, MD, NY, NJ, OH, etc.) on Craigslist and other online directories....and if you get one, a daytrip up this and an overnite Bed/Breakfast would be a nice getaway for ya.....lol.....there's usually a lot of good deals on those things up here.....

You might consider getting one that has a viewing window, instead of just steel or cast doors.
It won't be better or worse as far as heat goes, but it can be very enjoyable to just watch the fire.

inexpensive stoves

I got mine new for $500 or $550.
If I knew the type I was looking for, I would have considered used, but since all the advice I got pointed me to this new one (Englander 17) and it was about the same price as all the decent used ones, the choice was easy!
It doesn't use a lot of wood, and it keeps me warm and happy.

Your in my nick of the woods. Northern Tools has a nice wood stove for $474.99 I was going to buy this one but I went with a old Appalachian I find in the newspaper. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200393570_200393570

thats an epa exempt unit, locales which allow non certified units are getting scarcer heck we dont even build an exempt model any more , too restrictive on where we can sell them. its likley a good entry level stove but check your local codes first to see if an exempt unit is legal in your area before purchasing

I sold my Mag 2015 for 500.00 on CL and for what the buyer wanted I found the right jar for the lid.

My brother in law, a member here, had to make a teip up here to buy his englander 30...i can feel the pain. In the nirtheast we are blessed. But good things should come if you search. Takes some time and yes a drive is nearly always required, but the rewards of a good deal on a great stoves make it worth it.

Good luck.

I think the iwanna paper is in SC too. I saw a Good looking VC in this weeks. Mostly smoke dragons though. But there are epa stoves in it cuz some folks refuse to read or change their ways. Thats how I landed mine. Use www.searchtempest.com instead of your local CL, that helped too.

I think Kingquad nailed the good and less expensive models pretty well . . . if going new Englander is pretty popular and well liked here.

If going used, choose carefully. This can be a tough time of year to go shopping for used stoves vs. waiting until Spring . . . but some possible deals are out there.

Ran into this ad up here in Maine . . . hard to say the actual condition without inspecting the stove in person . . . but to my untrained eye this appears to be a Woodstock Fireview for only $350 (although it requires another $300 or so in parts -- not sure which parts though . . . ad never mentions it.)
