Question:

I was given an old Fisher cast iron wood burning stove without any installation instructions. My basic question is how do I find out what the specs are for needed distance from my walls. The State of CA says 3 feet if no manufacturer's specs are available. That would have it sitting out in the middle of my living room! Can you help?

Answer:

These older radiant stoves DO need 36" of clearance. There are different forms of wall protection you can use to reduce it by as much as 66%. These are listed in the codes available at your local Building Officials office. Most often, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) code is used for these "unlisted" stoves. Protective materials include:
1. Sheet Metal
2. Brick or Stone
3. Wonderboard or Durarock cememt board
