I've been loading some N/S lately. Keep that in mind for your short pieces or scrounged wood. 12 or 13" is a pretty good N/S size.

I went with the cast iron finish. simple, traditional, and easy to fix/polish, etc plus the Mrs. didn't think the price for enamel was worth it...

I've got about 1 cord at 14-16" for the my current VC Resolute Acclaim, about 1/4 of that is some shorties.

Because of our schedule, it will probably get installed after the new year, but I'll send pics as soon as I have them.

I wouldnt worry much about the shorties iffn I was you. Alot of my stuff is shorter than what the firebox will take so I just put 1 in and bump it over to the far end with another short piece and guess what? They burn.
Good choice on the matte black finish too. Thats what I went with. To me the fancy looks wernt that important compared to cost. You'll get just as much heat outta it no matter what color it is.
