When I get quotes on stoves such as the Jotul F400, there is an option for a blower, but it is not required. Without a blower, is it completely radiant heat, or is there some sort of convective air flow around the unit? Is a blower considered a necessity?

Thank you

I'm pretty sure the 400 is like the 500 and is purely radiant. The fan is not a necessity.

Whether a blower is needed or not depends on the house and stove location. Try without it. You can always use a table fan if necessary.

FYI_ the Castine F400 has no blower option, it is a radiant heater. The F500 Oslo and F600 Firelight have blower options, which requires you to buy the Rear Heat Shield too, as it acts like a cowling that the blower blows through over the back of the stove. Our suggestion is try the stove without it, but it is available, but is a bit heady (120 for RHS, 325 for the blower kit). Hope this helps.
