Just like one of the mods here told me once....
"Bad boys on the forum are not the ones you have to worry about..."
    I believe that...trust me...;)
  3. Adabiviak Feeling the Heat

This is only one of two forums that I peruse that isn't infested. I think this is because there's a certain level of maturity that's required to appreciate stoves/woodburning/pellet consumption and other themes related to home ownership. The other forum is work related and is for such a narrow, technical discipline that there might only be a few hundred members.

Thanks to Craig and the awesome mods here....they have no tolerance for a-holes.... mad0025.gif

I'm on several forums and most are pretty well behaved....most of the time. On Hearth, most of that crap I'm pretty sure isn't even seen by the majority.
Don't need it, don't want it, and I'm glad it's not tolerated here.
I'm here more than any other forum because of that.

I'm a registered member on quite a few different forums and this one is by far the most enjoyable.

I think the article is referring more to the zillions of sites where folks can post comments about news stories or whatever without any kind of registration required...not so much forums per se...although I imagine there are plenty of forums where a heck of a lot is tolerated that we don't need. In any case, I'm glad, too, that we don't put up with those shenanigans around these parts. Rick

I posted once on a craigslist discussion forum about a local issue I was concerned about. I didn't realize the discussions aren't local. Almost immediately, I was attacked for my stance from dozens of people who could care less about my issue. They just wanted to tell me I was wrong and stupid.

Once I realized this, before I just walked away, I became very sarcastic and just started overly agreeing with them and thanking them for their guidance. They continued to be really pissy and insulting. Again, this was over an issue they did not care either way about.

People put a lot of energy and time into arguing and insulting other people.

    It just made me sad.

Pretty much anywhere on the web you go for DIY info there is a cadre of regulars, usually professionals in whatever, that spend every night kicking the crap out of Harry Homeowner for asking a question or trying to get something done without hiring somebody to botch it for them. I just lurked hearth.com two software generations ago and noticed very little of that. But there was a lot of bashing member to member. When Craig installed the version before this one BG, Eric and him started cleaning that stuff out of here. It impressed me and the rest, as they say, is history.

With as many regulars as we have now it is starting to drift a little but with the new software we have the tools to catch the "drive-by" shooters before you guys ever see them. I used to get up in the morning and have to whack at least two or three over the first cup of coffee.

My .02, keep doing whatever you're doing, & thank you. This forum is friendly, informative, very family oriented imo. Don't seem to find a lot of that anymore. Thanks Craig, & mods. A C

;lol I've had more than one member here, who I took to task for one reason or another, chastise me and then generously take the time to tell me all about their experience as a moderator on one forum or another, and telling me how I really should do my job. Yup..."Thanks...I'll keep that in mind". ;hm (not)

As a new member I've been very impressed by the quality of posters here. Every one seems honestly interested in helping people. I've been at other boards in the past where flame wars are insane, or the power users have no patience for noobs. Heck even the ash can is suprisingly civil.

Sometimes I get the feeling half the posters on news sites are paid political operatives. They always spout the day's talking points verbatum. Plus I think annonymous comment pages encourage people to say horrible things they would never say in person

Early one morning I read a post that let's say wasn't up to hearth's standards and it was gone within the hour just like it never happened. Is that something we should click on the report option if we feel it's questionable?
  19. PapaDave Minister of Fire

This particular "comment board" allows much discourse as long as it remains civil. I like that, and that most of us keep it that way w/o having to be chastised or banned.
Gamma, I'm seeing in my mind the game where you have a big hammer and are trying to "whack" heads that keep popping up, then back down again. Yep, found it, it's called "whac-a-mole".

Yep, and all mods are notified. If they agree it "poof" disappears. It works well.>>

Maybe wisdom DOES come with age??? Or, at the very least, a bit of restraint.
