That web site may help you. It gets rather technical.

Heat pumps aren't very effective in cold weather, below 30F they start to loose efficiency. They then usually use electric heaters to make up the difference. What temperatures do you normally see through the winter? How much does you electricity usually cost?
 
This guy says even at 10 degrees his 20 seer heat pump still heats his house efficiently and he will not burn pellets as it is more efficient to run his 20 seer mini split am I missing something,read the thread its maybe 3rd or 4th page

The OP said -20* (page 4) which probably was Celsius, so -4* Fahrenheit for US.
