What stove manufacture? Only MP 40 I know of spits lead.
 
I do believe there is a knob that you turn or a rod that you pull and that is what opens the air tube to bring air into burn pt area. You have to make sure that guy is throughly cleaned or you will not notice any adjustments at all. It also helps to get an owners manual.
