forgot about all the hex shafts lol, I almost like the 23/2588 better than the 50/5288, the controls on the 5288 are a bit nicer and has a few more things you can adjust from in cab versus the 23/2588, @sloeffle I've not really officially shut it down all year, been running about once a weekish for DHW, I haven't turned the wahx bypass back on yet for the heat, we got our first frost this morning but house has been staying above 65 so haven't really worried, supposed to have decent temps yet for a few days but some rain too, I'm hoping that is done by friday night so we can finish reroofing my house over the weekend, then I can blow the new insulation in the attic and be done with that stuff! Then I can get back on the 1066 repaint and feed the polar as needed.

Lots of those still earning their keep around here.
Looks like lots of those Sterlings had 5.9 Cummins in them...cool.

@brenndatomu this one belongs to a friend from KY, it's a working show tractor, It's in a lot of pieces right now, the house took priority, insurance dropped my water intrusion insurance due to the poor condition of the roof, long story. I wanted to get the roof taken care of and the insulation done before it gets too cold. tractor can wait, it's been sitting sandblasted since 2016 so a month or two is not that big of deal, I got the main chassis portion done and all four wheels done and back on now.

I have two 5.9s one 12 valve in my 97 dodge and my wife has a common rail in her 05 dodge, one of the best engines built, I am partial but they are incredibly long lived and can take stupid amounts of power, I helped build one in a pulling truck that would spin 5K rpms and was making a little over 1500 HP

This is my fire truck project.Cat engine 17000 kms frame slightly bent.If the frame comes straight then a 6 cord dump box will be moved from a differant truck. If it dosn't straighten out then a service truck will be made from it adding a Hiab. fire truck loaded.jpg

@salecker that is going to be a sweet rig when you get it done !! Sure hope the frame isn't bent so you can haul wood in a fire truck 😁

@cumminstinkerer those 5.9's will drive away from the rotting Dodge bodies they live in. They run forever with even the tiniest bit of love.

I got my 048AV Electronic going today !! My Brother-in-law has been tinkering with it for a while and gave up. I put a new carb, fuel lines, ignition box and I want to change the air filter stuff as they are really hard to find but an not sure with what yet. I found a NOS Walbro WS-25 on fleabay for $25 so pretty stoked about that. It runs like a champ and will cut like crazy when I get it dialed in.

The firetruck was hit hard on the left front wheel
The frame has a slight bend where the rear spring hanger is mounted to the frame
The deck/tank will get removed then the truck will get blocked and chained to my lowbed at the points where the frame is true. Then i will start winching on the bent spot till it comes past where it should be.I'll leave it under tension for a day or two the relax the winch cable to se where memory takes it,repete if necessary
I'm hoping it comes straight, the big firewood customer base is 100 miles away.Using the firetruck would be nice as low milage should mean lot's of trouble free miles. The GF is looking forward to getting her license to drive it as well.

@jblnut good deal on the 048, I havent forgotten our deal either, things just been hectic. Hope harvest is still going well
Harvest is well underway ! We only have a few days of corn left and it'll be onto making corn straw, hauling manure and doing some tillage. Then I hope to cut a few dozen cord of firewood and relax for a few days until the winter shop projects take over 🤣

Sounds like it'll be a fun adventure and a sweet rig when you get it back on the road ! What kind of license do you need in Canada to drive a fire dump truck ?

Do you haul firewood home 100 miles or haul to others 100 miles away ?

Time to dust off some of the lesser used tools in the shop to justify them being here ! This metal muncher has come in handy before and worked perfectly to slide up this piece of 316SS I'll be using as an air filter base for the 048.
KIMG2614.JPG

In a previous life I was a Lely Product Specialist and worked as a Service Technician and did a ton of stuff on Lely milking robot. These filters are off the air compressors that supply them with air. We changed them on a regular interval and I kept the ones from the farms that nice clean air compressor rooms to be used for something one day. That day is today !
KIMG2615.JPG

I made a nice base to attach to the NOS WS-25. I'm going to have to get creative and make a nifty 50-60° elbow of sorts to attach the filter to this. I'm thinking a piece of SS pipe of sorts. It'll have to bolt to this plate as I don't know how to bolt this plate to the carb through an elbow. We'll see. I have all day today to think about it ! It got late last night so this is as far as I got.

Will be hauling firewood to the big city
Once my current business is either sold or leased out i will start logging firewood and trees to mill for some dry cabins i want to build on some land i have by a lake. They will be rental cabins for retirement income.
For this truck you need Air Brake endorsement and a class 3.I have a class 1 and 6 with air.I can drive anything legally including passenger busses, and bikes

That sounds like a great project ! Cutting firewood and building cabins and such sounds like a grand time.

I was curious on the license as I heard Canadian licenses are quite different than here in the states. I have a Class A with air brake, double/triple, tanker, hazmat motorcycle and school bus so I can also drive and haul just about anything.

To drive an off highway logging truck you needed an industrial multi unit license with an air endorsement. The biggest difference between it and a highway truck, was that with the industrial truck you had water piped to the drivers on the truck and to the two trailer axles. The tank behind the cab held 350 gallons of water and was pressurized to 20 lbs psi. With water to the brakes, you could run 56/60 lbs air pressure to the brakes with no fear of brake fade. You can see the water trails from the truck that was in front of me!

How did you keep the water from freezing in the winter ?

Just ride the brakes a lil...it'll stay warm ;)::-)
Drove to Hot Springs Va. a number of years ago on I-64 through W. Va. We were going down a pretty big hill and the rear brakes on the semi in front of us were smoking. Told the wife ( at that time ) no way are we passing that truck. At the bottom of the hill they stopped smoking and he just kept on going. Passed the guy eventually but I drove with one eye in my rear view mirror until we got off. If I remember right there are run away truck ramps on that part of I-64.

On nom nom the last of the corn getting combined !
KIMG2611.JPG

This is Enogen corn that I feed to the cattle and it has some purple tracers in it and the kiddos like to find them. I think Miss Alyssa was giving a preview of the years to come 😒
KIMG2626.JPG

I finally found something to give Big John a workout ! This 26' Wishek tillage disk was going around 10" deep and making the 9420 drink in the 18gal/hr area. It was using a solid 420-450hp to pull it. The turbo whistle on this thing is like music to my ears 😁
KIMG2641.JPG

Gather like a beaver, hide it like a squirrel 🤣
KIMG2642.JPG

I'm working on enclosing the lean-to on my shop and the kiddos distracted me with a project they wanted ......
KIMG2643.JPG

Weld up some handles next to a couple gas cans on a VERY messy welding table ......
KIMG2645.JPG

They found this teeter-totter frame in the weeds and wanted to bring it back to life. I made them do as much stuff as possible so they could take ownership of it and they did great ! Little Man is wearing pink Crocs and Lily kept loosing the paper-rock-scissors battles and had to be the counterweight 🤣
KIMG2647.JPG

They love it and it fits right in next to the swingset I built them earlier this year out of an old grain auger.
KIMG2650.JPG

Next up is chopping corn stalks to be used for cattle bedding !
KIMG2658.JPG

Baled 840 so far up into 4'x6' bricks that weigh 1,400lbs 😁
KIMG2660.JPG

Mama Bear brought the little guy and supper out the evenings I was baling. He's a little chatter box asking questions that I have no idea how he thinks up lol.
KIMG2662.JPG

Once baled I pick them up and haul them home 22 at a time. It takes about a week of 12hr days to get them all home and I'm only two days in so far lol.
KIMG2678.JPG

In actual Hearth.com news I fired up the boiler yesterday !
KIMG2681.JPG

She's a bit smoky burning old lumber and other junk but cleaned up once I started pitching in dry pine and poplar later in the day. Fingers crossed this pile lasts through the entire burning season ! Hopefully going to cover it this coming week before it rains again to keep the snow and ice off.
KIMG2683.JPG

I have been thinking about getting a larger dump trailer for a while now and today was the day ! It's a 8x16 Notch with road rated hubs, bearings and tires !
KIMG2696 (1).JPG

Leo approves ! This thing is about twice as big as the green one we have. Should hold a shade over 500 cu/ft or almost 4 cord of wood !
KIMG2697.JPG

I finished shed the lean-to wall enclosement project finally !!
KIMG2700.JPG

It ain't the fanciest wall you'll ever see but it's right up there with the most functionalist wall you've seen 🤣
KIMG2701.JPG

Pops got the last of the tillage done for the year. Feels real good to be done with the actual farming stuff for 2023. Now on to the wood cutting and tiling and other misc crap that gets pushed into the fall.
KIMG2707.JPG

Mama Bear and I ventured into the big city to go to a hockey game on her birthday. Too many paved surfaces here for my liking 😬
KIMG2709.JPG

The Wild won so she was all excited lol. It was a good game and we both had our own versions of a good time. She watched the game while I shouted things from Letterkenny and Shoresy. Lots of fun 😁
KIMG2713.JPG

I decided to cover the wood pile with some el' cheapo tarps to at least keep the snow off. We'll see if it makes a difference.
KIMG2714.JPG

One of those fall projects was cleaning up a hedge that's on a property line. I borrowed the tree grabber deal from a buddy and am excited to put it to work !
KIMG2718.JPG

The grabber made short work of pulling boxelder and other brush out of this hedge !! Gotta pick it all up and haul it away now.
KIMG2720.JPG

14 loads like this of brush and other junk wood. Feels good to have this done !
KIMG2722.JPG

Goodness that is a large hoist under that wagon ! It's a 20 ton hoist so it should be able to dump literally anything I put in it. Going to haul some chicken manure and a few loads of gravel in the coming weeks and really get the nice paint job scratched up lol
KIMG2723.JPG

Can that dump trailer be tagged and ran on the road ?

EDIT: Looking at your picture more, I don't see any brakes on the axles, so I'm going to say no.

I'm going to say it can't be licensed as a road trailer but it has road speed rates hubs/bearings and wheels so it'll get drug behind my Freightliner quite often. I'm not worried about stopping power as when it's loaded I'll likely go 30-35mph tops and 55ish unloaded. Also not real worried about using it for farm stuff on the road behind the truck. You can pull two unloaded farm trailers or one loaded farm trailer behind a licensed vehicle without legal worry. Supposed to stay under a certain speed though I think. Never been hassled about it so that's older Mikes problem 🤣

I have some lights ordered to put on it to make it more visible when on the road. Most of our newer farm stuff has lights so it's surprising this trailer doesn't. They didn't even have a lighting option when I ordered it which is even more odd. The smaller Notch dump trailers come with lights but this one doesn't I guess.

EDIT: is that a tandem pair of Lamborghini's in your profile picture ?!

It's a Fordson Doe. I have 1959 Power Major sitting in the barn collecting dust. I used it for a few years until a got a more comfortable CUT in the same HP ranger to take over its duties. The CUT definitely doesn't have the grunt ( weight and it has a square vs oversquare engine on the CUT would be my guess ) of the Power Major but the ergonomics of it are horrible. In 1959 they could care less about stuff like that.
