I have a steel stove down to bare metal, and shiny in places where it was rusted. Should I prime it? Stove Bright's website says their paint is self-priming, yet they have a 1200° primer. Color is metallic black, if it matters.

You can spray Stove Brite on the bare metal. Be sure to degrease first with a wipe down of alcohol, lacquer thinner or acetone. Take your time, it will need multiple coats, and be careful when painting. Stove Brite paints are good, but you really want to have excellent ventilation and wear a vapor mask. Follow their directions. The fumes from this paint are not too be toyed with. They can cause brain damage.

No need to prime from my limited experience with it. As begreen said the key is a clean/grease free surface and multiple thin coats, don't try to cover it with one heavy coat.

I was planning on as many coats as two cans would give me. Any advantage to firing between coats?

No, I don't think so.

Cool, thanks. After I get it welded up this week, it'll be ready for paint. Then the work begins (hearth and chimney).
