so i picked this up for nothing , aside from my time and gas. it's a cat stove i believe...i've never owned a cat stove but from what i've read i wont like it because i dont always burn super dry wood.just is what it is.... i have also read some parts are discontinued on this.... by the looks of it it needs a cat , pins for side door, 1 leg , some gasket work, a little cement patching and the ash pan was junk. i had a heritage years back and liked it. it was a non-cat stove. if this were non cat i probably would'nt even be asking about it. has anyone just eliminated the cat and ran it without? i'm aware it wont meet epa guidelines and wont perform to optimum efficency, yada-yada, but i like the stove otherwise? feedback appreciated. i am going to post a bunch of pics once my camera batteries charge

Unless something has changed, hearthstone does not make a cat stove. If it is a newer stove (1990s+), it is an EPA certified stove and uses secondary burn tubes for a more complete combustion once the stove gets up to temp. You don't need to do anything special to control this stove, only monitor the airflow via a lever that should be on the lower left side as you face the stove.

My first stove was a homestead and I liked it except that it was a bit too small for my house and realistically I got about a 6-6.5 hours burn before I needed to reload.

Hearthstone also made stoves before the EPA regs came in the late 80s, Hearthstone, Hearthstone II, etc. But chances are if this has a plate that says "Homestead" on it, is not one of those earlier models.

Good luck.

well, i came across a thread somewhere on the web that says they made it in a cat stove from 89-92. then went to non cat with secondary tubes. this stove is all steel on backside. has a top or rear exit for flue. it has a side door and a glass front door. it is deeper from front to back than a newer homestead. does not say homestead anywhere i can see, only says "hearthstone" on flue cover and flue collar. at first i thought it was a mansfield , but it's not .it has a ash pan that pullls out the side. has a front door like a mansfield or a newer homestead with the curved top piece. a pic is worth a thousand words, when i get camera charged later today i will take pics and post them

Hearthstone did make cat stoves long ago. I recall the cat being down low in the back and for some reason people weren't too impressed with it. It must have been too hard to operate.

The only problem you will have without the cat is that you will need to burn more wood than you normally would and you may have to clean the chimney more often. I have burned our cat stove without engaging the cat but only for a very small and quick fire where we did not need or want much heat but I would not consider running it that way all winter.

Wow it's a crying shame what the previous owner did to that stove.... :eek:hh:

Looks like it needs a total rebuild, I wouldn't burn it as is.

yeah, guy left it outside. obviously cant burn as is. want to know-

positive id of stove ?

does anyone here have......or had this stove?

has anyone here eliminated the cat ? if so how did that work out?

my thought was to make a steel plate for backside to cover where cat goes. i would leave baffle opening alone unless it becomes an issue with drafting properly in which case i could cover hole on inside back wall. then it would be pretty much eliminated completly.

also......anyone know how the item in the 7th pic works with this? it appears to be a heat sheild, just not sure how it mounts ?
