30-35 years good enough? Old hedge posts. Pic #1 piece on the left was cut off the center piece & right hand piece was fresh cut. Pic #2 is of the posts I drug out of the thicket. Pic #3 is the thicket they were in. I was getting all the good firewood out of a fence line that is scheduled to be pushed out. I had forgotten those posts were even piled there. They have been there since I was a kid so they may be over 40 years old. There are a few more in there, I just have to get the tractor & loader to get them out. Pic #4 is of a fresh cut chunk that won’t make it as a fence post so it’s going to become firewood also.

Boy the rings on those are deep, visually.

I have some hedge posts that I pulled from a fence line that my Dad and I put in in the middle sixties. They were old when we put them in and are probably 100 years old. Still hard as granite, use some of them for knife scales. Hedge is some of the most beautiful wood there is when finished.

Would not mind one of those!

Id love to have some of the osage, do you have a moisture meter? Curious what the moisture content would be after all those years.

I will grab a piece this evening on my way by & bring it in the house. I’ll try to give you an answer Tuesday morning.

I’m also curious about the MC content.
I just realized that Osage Hedge and Black Locust has very similar ring structure.
If I saw the your Osage Hedge rings , I’d have thought it was Black Locust. But I’m very inexperienced.

Here are the results of the Hedge MC after 24hrs inside the house @ 67 degrees.

Pic #1 is the old fence post pulled out of a plum thicket & had been laying there for 30 plus years; also after the original pic was snapped we received over an inch of rain & 8” of snow in this piece. Average reading

Pic #2 is of a piece of Hedge cut 2 weeks ago.
Average reading

Pics #3 & #4 are of another old Hedge post that was cut up last winter & has been inside my machine shed since, readings were the high & low marks

Pic #5 is of the meter on my hand for reference
