This is an awesome, near real time animation of the winds across the US. It's a fascinating view of the power of the wind. Click to zoom in. Hypnotizing.

Nice! Wish I could figure out how to make a screen saver out of it.

It's cool to watch how things change over time. I've bookmarked it and now visit it daily. In their notes they indicate that they are thinking of doing one for the whole earth if there is good interest in it. They're open to ideas, suggest the desktop map or a screensaver to them. You can contact them at:

They need to put in more landmarks for position reference. If you zoom in you can't tell where you are.

When I zoom in I see more nearby cities. Are you zooming into the Dakotas?

I was viewing the area around Roanoke, VA. Its north of Greensboro, NC which was the nearest city I could see but is 200 miles away.

I can't find anywhere that they say anything about the altitude of these winds they're animating on the map. If you could do a sort of wind MRI vertically up through our atmoshpere, I think you'd see that both wind speed and direction vary widely with altitude. Are they displaying this as a dynamic map of surface winds...or what?

    Hampton, NH.. For now.
You can just hold your cursor over the map and zoom into 37.3 N 80.0 W and that should give you Roanoke.
