OK so i was trying to center my condar thermometer while the stove was running, (with my welding gloves on), guess i took a little too much time and the leather and black soot from the glove melted onto the stove. Any ideas on how to get burned leather and soot off a insert?

Yep, run the stove hot for a couple of days and it should pretty much "carbonize". You should be able to wipe it off fairly easy at that point.
