... that we have too much wood. Or more specifically, that I'm spending too much time splitting and stacking it. (Actually, I'm just trying to get the piles turned into stacks. So far, 2 cords of hickory put up, 2 more of black locust, plus another half of cherry. I reckon at least another cord of cherry rounds to go.)

I actually turned down a big maple scrounge because we may be moving house within 18 months.

My lady doesn't understand why I am not cutting/splitting/stacking more. "We used to have thirteen cords heading into winter. Now we just have nine. Will we have enough three years from now?".

"Good grief love of my life. We only burn three a year now with the newer stove! And I am old." I think she wants enough so the next guy doesn't have to do any work when I croak.

You could try telling her the truth.
"It's fun & rewarding work that you enjoy doing. Working hard by yourself & watching the stacks grow gives you a warm feeling"
Nice to sit & look a the stacks with a cool beer in the evening."

After I read it again, Maybe the truth is not such a good idea.;ex !!

I'd gently urge her to cut you some slack, because the next guy's bound to be younger & stronger, so no worries.

You're a rare bird, Bart. Not everyone could do what you've done for so many years now. Nobody could ever replace you...stick around, you're needed. Rick

My wife hasn't come right out and said anything yet but I think she's wondering why I want to get so far ahead. I'm sure that family, friends and neighbors are starting to talk about an intervention. ;lol
Actually, right now I'm just trying to get rounds off the ground, split and stacked to make room. I'll get some more wood, some primo stuff that's available, but I'll probably stack it on pallets so I can wait on splitting and stacking it for now and not worry about it rotting. I've also got some in-laws that aren't far enough ahead yet so I'll be getting them some of the down Red Oak type stuff that's around here, but I have them set for this Winter and there's some White Ash I can get them for 2013...

Leave the t-stat at 65 this winter. She'll see the light rather quickly.;)

Huh, mine wouldn't recognize the difference from 3 cord to 30. I don't think she even realizes that there is piles of wood out back.

ours is always at 64 deg...does that push me beyond "frugal" into "uncivilized"? I really can't take it much warmer, but my wife does ask "Is the heat on?" quite a bit.

64??? I'd be divorced for sure! My house is a pretty constant 75 all winter. I'm outnumbered 3 to 1 on that vote. That's ok, I like to spend as much time outside in the winter, anyways.

This is the reason we bought a wood stove! To keep it that warm, otherwise it was set on 65-68!
