Does anyone know or have any experiences at burning wood in one of these units, or is it strickly a coal burner?

Depends. IT says in your sig its an early VC vigilant, so I assume your referring to what was essentially a wood stove with a coal conversion kit in place. If that's what you have, pull the conversion kit out and you'll have no problem burning wood.
If its an older model of one of the newer vigilants that was designed for coal, you can certainly burn wood in it, but it won't do such a great job. It'll burn the wood, but the narrow, deep shape of the firebox will prevent very good loading of the wood. Also, there is no air wash so your windows will turn black in no time. Not trying to discourage you from trying, but the current coal model of the Vigilant is just not designed to be a great wood burner.

I have burned wood in a Vigilant for many years. It is a workhorse that will heat one floor of a ranch style house. I am looking for coal kit parts. Would you be willing to to sell the conversion kit? Let me know at E-Mail [email protected].
