South central Illinois
Hello to the room. I am in the process of choosing a stove for a new installation and after a lot of research I really like the Cape Cod by Lopi. The problem is this stove is rated at 86000 btu's. My house is 1484 square feet with R30 in the attic and R11 in the walls all fiberglass. I live in south central Illinois and hope to keep the house around the mid 70's. While lurking around this forum I have read that most of you recommend a stove a little larger than what you think you need, but I am afraid this is overkill. I also like the Ashford 30 by Blaze king but this is also a large stove.

Hey Gaildean,

I'm a bit north of you in Peoria. I think a lot depends on where you are trying to heat from. Basement? Main level? My house is 1700 sf and I run my stove in the basement. I went with a bigger stove for that reason and am quite pleased with the results. Also, I only use the stove as suppliment to my forced air furnace because trying to heat the whole house from the basement is an up hill battle.

I am 25 miles NW of Effingham about 90 mile south of you. I will be installing the stove on the main floor of the house which is a single story ranch.

Although the Cape Cod is a gorgeous looking stove I would sooner put in the Ashford. It will afford you much more control over the low burn. Read webby3650's comparison ownership of these two stoves and maybe have a chat with him.

You might also want to consider the Quadrafire Cumberland Gap, Enviro Boston and Jotul Oslo F500.
