Ya, I'm learning that if you get the reputation as the weird new neighbor nice and early after moving in, then you dont have any expectations to live up to in the future... Success.

My favorite way to get rid of them is to dump them along the edge of the road during a snow storm. As the plow comes through he does a really nice job of spreading them out for me so that there aren't mole-hill-esque ash piles around the edge of the property.

You can spread them over the lawn, but i take mine and fill in the cracks of the patio i have. then sweep the ash into the cracks. In high concentrations they keep weed seeds from germinating. Makes it a lot easier to do yard work.
