Yup, got home this afternoon and the house was only 65 even with the little Prodigy running.

SOOOOOOOOoooooooo I decided to fire off the Advantage in the family room and warm the place up for the eavening.

Supposed to get into the 30's tonight and the little stove just can't hack 2300 sqft by itself

Once the temps regularly get down low and or stay below 50F in the daytime it takes the larger stove to keep the place warm.

Word has it that with the La Nina this winter we may get slammed with some serious cold and snow.

Then we will fire off everything to keep the shack warm.

Imagine that Snowy....you're getting cold weather, and here in the NE it was 78 degrees outside today. :cheese:

Blizzard warnings up in North Dakota, tons of bad stuff going on in the Midwest.

Got a sis on CO. Lots a snow falling. :ahhh:

Can I get my leaves tended to before you wish for that cold white crap on us? >:-(

Better the cold white crap than the cold wet white crap or cold freezing liquid crap.

I'm waiting for the leaves to stop falling so I can give the chickens something to work on for the compost piles.

My job these days is making garden soil.

Winter will be here soon thats for sure. Hard to believe that we are at the end of October already. Ive heard that story about La Nina and how the winter will be very cold with more snow than usual, and I hope thats wrong. Whatever the weather does I'll be ready for it , the stove is all cleaned up and the hopper is loaded. I know its just wishful thinking but I kind of wish it were February and we were all chomping at the bit for spring to arrive. I really have a dislike for winter even though I have lived here all my life, you think I would be used to snow, ice, and cold weather.

I hear that, I've lived in upstate NY most of my life, and I just deal with getting through it every year, but I'll never get used to it, less so I think, the older I get. Maybe this old saying applies: "familiarity breeds contempt". :)

NW Oregon where I live is usually JUST WET in the winter with temps in the mid 40' F

Here at the ranch its dreary any time there is a system moving through. the 1200Ft elevation puts us just high enough that we are in the slop.

We already have snow up in the Mts to the east of us above the 3000Ft mark.

To have snow this early is really rare though. Normally a Thanksgiving opening for the ski rsorts is something they crow about, but to have snow before Holloween is almost unheard of.

Never know though, it could warm back up a bit, but I just doubt it from the look of things.

This years Hazelnut crop is very small, so I am waiting anxiously to get over to the nut plant and pick up my supply of shells.

Been snooping around for a large dumpster with lids to store more shells in.

I have room in one barn to stick a 8-10 foot long dumpter. This would make shell storage a real cool deal.

Currently, I have to fill barrels up and store them in the basement. Would be nice to be able to get rid of several of the smaller storage containers and free up some space.

So far I have not come across a dumpster for sale "Cheap"

Anyway, the early cooler/colder weather is already eating away at my supply of shells.

The Old Advantage took off just fine after having been let sit over the summer. Really like that stove.

Took very little in the way of mods to get it to run superbly on shells. Had to make a little plate with rows of small air holes to fit in the grate, as the bars were too coarse and all the shell pieces fell right through into the ash pan. :grrr:

The other mod was a little bar in the center of the pot to scatter the shell pieces over the fire.

Without this addition, the stuff piles up after an hour or so and just make a little mountain that does not burn out.

I thought about an auto grate shaker but this is getting too complicated. I can take the time to get off my butt and clean the pot once a day.

Ahhh well, the joys of alternate fuels eh ??

I am not much into the enviro scene, but I do like the idea that what I am burning is a yearly renewable resource and is a product that is total waste after the crop is harvested.

I looked into a pellet mill and such , but the cost is $$$$$$$$$$$ for the return. The amount of time that it takes to process your own pellets is far more than using the shells.

The low setting makes for a very small fire with just the right heat for what we need now.

I see white crap falling from the sky at this moment..ish.and to think I left my birthplace of California for this..
Ok ..That was 35 years ago and I was way ahead of the curve...

now I have developed like a nervous twitch or reaction..

Every time I go anywhere, even for a plumbing part I need to check out pellet prices?

It must be pellet pig disease formation.

Cambridge , Mn.... Menard's Indecks for $219 a pallet.

I resisted ...but it is getting hard...oink

Resistance is Futile, You Will Assimilate.

You drank the blue cool aid. It's too late for you now, there is no cure :cheese:

You guys out east hold on to your hats!

Very humid here now in Ct, can't stand it!!

It's 71 with 90% humidity in the Socialist Republic of Rhode Island. Hope the white crap stays out west so we can get rid of the leaves by the second week in November! You should see the size of the acorns around here.... boy, are we gonna get a BAD winter! Reservoir is down almost two feet so that means wetness is around the corner...

You sun lovers need to get yourselves snowmobiles-it will give you a whole new outlook on winter!

I dont dislike winter particularly but, as I get older, I dont enjoy it as much.

The snow generally screws things up here, as we are just not set up for it, and far too manny folks dont understand the concept of driving in the stuff.

far too many of the younger folks have been brainwashed with all this antilock brakes and computer traction control stuff.

Just need to learn from a clean slate on how to drive in the inclement weather without all the electronic doo goodies.

This area also does not have the equipment to deal with snow removal on a large scale.

Soooo, if we get a real snow maker come in here, it can get rather tedius in places.

The machinery will be used on the main arterials and the secondary street/roads just get let go.

Out where I live, its not uncommon to see up to 3 feet of snow fall on the are and nothing done to take care of it.

Winter 08 was nasty here with about 4 feet of the white fluff at the ranch. Couple of us locals went to work with our own equipment to clear the roads in to the main roads.

With 4 wheel drive its not a real issue, unless we get a big wind out of the north along with the snow. Then we can get drifting that will fill in major areas of the road up to 20 ft deep.

Nope not gonna drive out that way.

Ahhh well, such is life.
