What is the best kind of wood to carve with? my brother wants to start carving sculptures out of wood
 
Bass wood.
 
it really depends on what you want to carve. a lot of people like boxelder for colors and the burls....
 
learn on Bass .
Soft and easy to carve
Then go for the prettier woods
