Without seeing the tree first guess is a pine of some sort. EDIT: Actually no, more like a Larch(Tamarack)

Which area of the world did it come from? London Ontario?

My Guess is Tamarack.
 
It looks like cherry but not sure if you have that where you are.

Then I stick with my guess :) The only cherry there would be choke cherry and the bark is quite different.

I'm thinking tamarack and second guess would be some kind of pine, Jack pine maybe.
 
Oak groves here and there most long gone to clear space for farm land.

But we have a mix depending where you are in the province
 
I see black cherry
 
Shoulda put this in the "wood shed" forum, but yeah, bark looks kinda like Black Cherry, however there is no sapwood visible so I would think it's something else.
 
First impression was black cherry.
