Came out a couple years ago. We recommend it to those occasional enthusiasts that want more than a 24 hr burn time.

I wonder if they tried it with the log vertical so it would self feet and decided that it was too likely that the flame would climb the log.
 
My insurance company would NEVER go for that.....
 
Dick Hills stove sort of worked that way, the wood was loaded into a vertical cylinder and burned from the bottom. As the log burned it dropped down. There was a ID fan on the stove so when the loading door was opened there was no smoke.
