20 year old Heatilator IPI was turning off immediately after lighting. Tech diagnosed the controller as the problem. Replaced controller, turned on gas, plugged it in and it lit a fire with the switch off. Fireplace thinks it is turned on regardless of switch position. Fire can be turned off and on by unplugging and plugging in the controller.

I would think there are only a few parts that can go bad, controller, switch and thermo-couple if equipped. Did the tech say how he determined the controller was bad? Might want to see if a Mod can move this to It's a Gas forum for better answers though.
