Any suggestions as to how to get up and stay up on a 12/12 pitched metal roof? The chimney we are replacing is about 8 foot from the edge of the eave. Trying to figure out a way to get there without having to rent a lift. So far, we are thinking of rigging a ladder with 45 degree angle brackets to go over the roof cap. Need to have something in place to repaint the metal roof anyway. Thanks!

Get a ridge hook for a ladder that is how we do it. We have allot of other things as well but ladders with ridge hooks are the normal go to solution.

Thank you. We have a guy coming out to give us an estimate, just so we have something to compare to DIY, but, as I've said, we need something that we can put on the roof and pretty much leave there til winter. Screws get loose, hate the color of our roof (blue in the middle of the woods!), etc. Appreciate all the advice.

Sorry to bug you again, but is there any special thing I should look for/avoid in a ridge hook?

I roofed a 12/12 in comp last year. I hated it! You actually don't stand on the roof as much as lean against it. Metal roof being slippery. Not envious.

Not really otherthan dont get one with a swivel wheel. We took the wheels off and bolted a fixed rubber caster to the side of the ladder

We have pieces of 2x4's with metal plates screwed onto the underside of them. They are spaced and predrilled at the same spacing as the screws on the roof. Remove the screws and secure the board down using the existing holes in the roof. These same toe boards can be used on a shingled roof too, they get fastened on under the shingle tabs.

The ridge ladder works well too, we often use both, or rest our single section of an extension ladder on the toe board rather than hang it from the ridge. Often it's hard to get all the way around the chimney from the ridge hook ladder, where the toe board can be mounted to the roof right below your work and you can reach it all from one location.

We were thinking 2 extension ladders with 2 ridge hooks each with 2 people (my husband and neighbor) working together. We have to go 8' above the roof with the chimney to get it 2' above the ridge cap, as the chimney is less than 10 ft away from the peak.

Be sure to use a roof brace kit.

That'll work too.
On a 12 pitch, we've also laid the ladder on the roof extending to the ground. Let the neighbor be a counterweight.. no real need for 2 people on the roof.

Google "Chicken Ladder". You will get all the info you need, and options.

A single section of a 24' extension ladder with leg levelers and a removable ridge hook is probably my most useful tool. There's rarely a day that I don't use it at some point.

I'm not sure our ladder is that long. We have to go up 2 stories. I'll have to check. The one we have was inherited from the previous owner.
