Hi.

I have 2 fireplaces, 1 has a woodburning stove, the second a regular fireplace. (please see pics 1 and 2)

For the woodburning fireplace I'm looking for advice on what to do around the edges? Where the fireboard was attached, this has come away so I would like to cover this up somehow. It seemed to come away once the burner had been used a few times. Also what do you think about the top? Would putting an oak beam for example in order to make the top rectangular with the rest of the fireplace trap hot air from coming out into the living room? Should I leave it the shape it is?

The second fireplace (please see pics 3 and 4) I'd like to restore back to working order. It was temporarily boarded up when I moved in but had been used prior by the previous owners a few months before selling. I've had a chimney sweep clean both chimneys prior to getting the woodburner installed. My question is what do I need to buy exactly in order to get it up and running?

Also, the second fireplace seems fairly small at 35.5cm max wide, with a depth of 37cm. I have looked for grates but they all seem too large.

Welcome to the forum!

I assume you are located in Manchester, UK? The first fireplace could be simply a problem of the paint blistering due to the heat from the stove and pipe. Ask in your hardware store for paint that can withstand high temps. However, I would also check what is underneath the paint to make sure it is non-combustible. You will also need to check what is the top clearance for your stove before putting an oak beam over it. It is wood after all.

The second fireplace looks more like a coal burner. Not sure how well that would work with wood.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I'm in Manchester :)

Where the board has come away, I'd like to put something over so the seem isn't showing - something similar to the other fireplace where you see the gold trim.

As for the the other fire, yes I'd be using coal for that but not sure exactly what I need and do I have to protect the brickwork?
