Is it just up where I live in Vermont or are the pellet prices pretty much identical to what they were last season? I was quite honestly expecting a fairly significant decrease in pricing because last "winter" if you want to call it that was so mild that many people didn't use their stock up completely and I figured the pellet manufacturers/distributors would have lot's of leftovers so the market would be pretty well flooded this upcoming season but the prices I'm seeing locally are just about the same high prices I was seeing last year before we knew that winter would skip us...kinda' depressing!

I haven't looked at prices but around me the prices dropped real low in early spring and most of the stock in my area was bought up at lowest prices I have seen in 10 years. It will be interesting to see what prices are around me. I am figuring most people bought, as I did, for this season on the sales of the spring pricing. I will bet that sales in my area will be down for this summer and fall purchasing. I will have to check prices.
Pretty much the same pricing here in PA. Also, I stocked up last year during the sales so I'm good for this season

GF burns me and pellets. Prices from same dealer,same pellets and delivery dropped $60.00 a ton. She had a half ton left and brought 3.5 ton for this season.
Also had a huge drop in oil prices by switching oil companies and prepaying. She is about the same price wise oil vs pellets but loves the pellet heat.Who am I to complain if she keeps me warm ?

I also bought this spring at a reduced rate, nothing crazy, but I always buy in the spring and the price was right. Prices now seem to be similar to last year. I think suppliers will try to get as much as the can, but many people bought at big box stores when they were clearing out inventory! Guess we will see, not that it matters to me! I don't think I'll find a better price ($259/ton) on what I bought..
Price of heating oil and natural gas are expected to be cheap so far fewer folks will be buying pellets plus many have pellets left over from last winter.
That's exactly what I was thinking! I mean last season the cost of oil/gas went down so far that it was actually cheaper to heat your home with those than it was with pellets. I figured the pellet dealers would learn from that after (no pun intended) being burned so bad last Fall/early Winter that price gouging would no longer work as there suddenly were more viable alternatives. I can get a ton of LG's delivered for $260 but I'm going to check on oil prices locally before I buy them, I like the wood heat but if oil is cheaper I'll do what's best for my wallet!
I have no sympathy for pellet factories /sellers. In the past they were always quick to raise prices and blame the rising costs on oil ,gas ,and transportation.
When the price of oil fell they didn`t respond accordingly and they got stuck with previous years pellets . I bought the coming winter`s supply in May but at a reduced price otherwise I would burned oil this year and told them to stick it!
I`m pretty sure I got left over pellets but the price was much lower than I paid last year.They`l burn just as good as the new ones.

Starting to see private sales in the sub-200 range on CL. Most say they are not going to burn pellets this winter or they are moving. Lots of deals on the way I believe. Patience will be rewarded.

Oil looks like king again this year. I believe the prices on pellets will come down much faster this year than last. The pellet industry will get stuck with a lot of pellets if they don't lower their prices this year. Many distributors are going to be careful on their stock pile this season as they got stuck with taking the shaft on unloading at the high prices they had to pay at the manufacturers. Sales will be coming!!

Have the first 2 tons coming from our dealer , They assured me that they were'nt leftover from last year , I travel past their shop though a lot and have seen a lot of pellets from the same bunch as we bought from last year , Any way to tell by upc codes or whatever on when they were made ..? Wouldn't be too concerned but they are outside ,even if covered by plastic and it's been a long humid summer ...

There may be dates on the bags, but that is when the bag was made, not when the pellets were bagged. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do (AFAIK) to figure out when the pellets were made and bagged. If the bags say 2015, it is likely they are last year's pellets, but they could just be bags left from last year bagging this year's run. Best bet is if a bag was made 6/2016 or later, then one would think they have fresh pellets in them (although no guaranty) .

I am in PA and i drove by our local Lowes the other day and they had pellets outside. I am 99.9% sure the sign said $6.99 per bag! NO THANKS

This past weekend, a Lowe's employees told me that they "tried to set the market price higher last year" with their $279 a ton pricing. They ended up dumping most of them for $199 a ton end of season since most of us went else where.
He wouldn't give me this year's price, claimed he didn't know......

The local Home Depot and the local pellet suppliers are about the same as they were last fall/early winter, which is to say, too high. Maybe the prices will come down a bit over the next month or two if no one buys. I have a few bags of Nature's Own left over from last season, but once I'm out of that I'll just buy what I need. Not that I have room to store much more than a ton anyway.
As an all electric baseboard house, I have no other choice but to buy pellets... Well I do have a kerosene heater but that's a real PITA. I never thought I'd be wishing I had an oil furnace... $1.62/gal right now...

I was happy with my spring early buy for Dry Creeks at 220 A ton. Bought 3 ton. Got them 2 weeks ago.

reading about deep summer into fall this year. water off NE coast +++++*. late winter to bring the crap. nothing but trouble for those peddlin the pellets. glad I got a new 3-pass oil boiler. haven't bought and won't burn 1-1 1/2 cord and 1 ton bricks all going thru the thermostat this year>

I'm thinking they must all be reading the Farmer's Almanac which is predicting an actual Winter this year complete with very cold temps and lot's of snow for the Northeast because of a La Nina forming this Fall and early Winter. While I hope that is true because I missed Winter last year I don't like the high pellet prices after so many dealers being stuck with a boatload from last year. I just checked and local oil prices are at $1.96 a gallon...at that price oil is a better deal than pellets right now...how long will those low oil prices last, who knows but if they last most of the Winter the pellet dealers who refuse to acknowledge that oil is the better deal and adjust their prices accordingly to try and get people to switch back will be screwed!
