Just wondering, does anyone know what a fair price is to pay for installation of a pellet stove?

I can't say what a fair price would be but I got quotes that ranged from $750.00 to $1,000.00 for a basic install plus the cost of the pipe. Thats why I decided to do my own install which I am working on now as time permits.

Wow i paid $400 and i thought that was high for an hour job

we only charge $350
an out the wall and up job is only 3 hours including clean up and showing you how to use the stove
I dont see how thies people can be charging that much

Wow.. and here I thought the $400 I was quoted was a high price.. guess that is reasonable with what others are charging.

Mine was $238 for material and $400.00 for labor and delivery(approx. 40 miles from stove co.) Direct vent w/air intake.

$500 for the install, $150 for site prep and all of the permiting stuff. This dose not include any hardware.

Can't remember exactly as it has been a while, but it was not more

It is highly variable based on your install. If it's a simple straight out through the wall, no rise, $350-400

If you're going up through a ceiling and attic, you can go anywhere from $1000-1400 depending on how much extra piping it will require (I did mine this way and components alone, retail price were almost $400) and how much time the installer has to spend in your attic and on your roof.

I was quoted $500 for a direct vent (horizontal)
which was for the labor only and that was in the
October 2005. That was too much
for my liking so my brother and I did it ourselves but went
all the way up the chimney instead.

It depends on what the installer has to offer in their package. I was quoted $800-$1000 and we wouldn't have to purchase a thing (stove pipe, sealant, pad included). Though it was pretty nerve wracking when you go to cut holes through the side of your house. We did it ourselves and had to buy:

reciprocating saw $90
some high temp sealant $12ish
vent pipe $239
made my own pellet pad $60
painted the stove pipe black w/high temp stove paint $12ish

Uh-oh, now you're going to be looking for other things to use that reciprocating saw on. I remember my first year with one.

I think it all depends on the installation. A simple straight out, up & out, or out & up shouldn't be much more that $3-400, IMO.

I COULD see much more if there were ceilings and roofs to go through, seal up, etc, etc, but $1500 seems VERY steep for anything but the most complicated and labor intensive install.
