Past 2 days I cut down 3 trees 1 oak and I thought 2 maple. Oak and maple split with no problems but third tree was a elm and not the maple I thought. Elm is a pain in the a-- to split . What do you recommend to get the elm split? I am not looking forward to it. should I let it sit in the cold and split in January or will it make a difference?

Buy a splitter....Huskee 22.....

I cut down a dead standing elm this summer. Hadn't been dead for too long. A year or two. I split it this past weekend and it split fine. Took a few more hits with the axe than the maple I was also splitting but no problem really. Maybe letting it dry for a season would make life easier? I only split with an axe and maul so don't know how well a splitter would work. Good luck.

Some Elm you simply can't split without a hydraulic splitter. Some say it goes easier in the winter, but if you get some really gnarly stuff - it won't matter.
