Looks like the pellet boiler has 1" feed and return lines, the existing feed and return headers are 1 1/4", and the buffer tank feed and return lines are 1 1/2". Furthermore, the buffer tank had a dhw coil inside which has 1 1/4" connections.

I think I will stick with the 1 1/4" and adapt down at the pellet boiler and up at the buffer tank. Adapt up from 3/4" house dhw piping to the 1 1/4" tank coil connection.

Should the locations of the adapters be right at the equipment? Am I using the right approach?

What BTU output are you using? 1 1/4" fittings and pipe are quite a bit more than 1", and are only really necessary if using more than 100MBtu/hr and it's just barely justifiable at that output. If it's not extremely long runs a 1" will suffice and save you money.

^^^^^ this is very good advice!

I thought I would just extend the existing 1.25" headers. Maybe less disturbance when dumping into the 1.5" connections at the buffer tank. It won't be that long a run. Is going up to 1.25 from 1 that prohibitively expensive for a short run?

If its a short run, don't worry about it. My local Home Depot carries nothing 1.25", so I got all mine from online and FWWebb. I spent a lot of money on 1.25 and in hindsight I should have saved some money and done 1".

I did notice that HD carried 1" max. I did price something or other at, I think, FW Webb the other day, and they were wildly expensive to this guy who's not in the industry. Perhaps if I tore everything out. It's cool that you can get different size flanges for the circ pumps.

Pexuniverse.com was a great resource for my install. Flange valves were 1/2 price of everywhere else. I bought my elbows somewhere else in a 10 pack because they were half price that way... like $2 an elbow. 3/4" ells were $0.70 that way.

Not pexsupply BTW... pexuniverse. Free shipping after $250 and better prices. Pexsupply has a few more items however.
