Looking at Grandma I noticed that the 2 air intakes when fully open were substantially different. One was about 3/8” open and the other about 1/2” open. So I loosened the intake nuts and backed off until both were at 3/4” space fully opened. Easy repair. I don’t know what is factory space so I will start with that.

Original bolts measure 4 inches of thread.

The farther you adjust the bolt out, the more you can open the damper. Since more than two or three turns isn't needed, I adjust for a better look when closed. Not too much bolt sticking out when closed, about the full head. If too much, they just look bad sticking out. Avoid adjusting them too far in. It's nice to be able to get a wrench or socket on the head to remove some day. If they are already adjusted too far in, a very thin wall socket is needed or grind an old one down..... That's the damper socket.

3/4" inch air space should be plenty to get it going. I leave my draft caps open all the way until the stove pipe thermometer gets up to 500, then I close the caps all the way, then open them a 1/4 turn for the all day or all night burn. 1/4 turn, not a 1/4 inch.
