Just came across this article in the Rivertown Pump and Boiler News and don't know what to make of it. I have heard nothing about this.
" In a surprise announcement today, the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency released this joint statement regarding bio-mass and wood burning boilers.
The EPA director in charge of the new program, Mr. Wood, told the Rivertown News that, "new research has come to light regarding the benefits of solid fuel boilers." This research was conducted by a consortium of manufacturers across the industry in Europe and the United States and proved without doubt that the technology exists to make the flue gas discharged by boilers using this technology, cleaner than the combustion air entering the boiler. "This breakthrough will have worldwide impact" according to the EPA spokesperson, "as it has the capability of halting global climate change within 5 years time". Also noted was the fact that after the five years of atmospheric cleanup, care would have to be taken that CO2 levels would not be reduced too far. "This would result in reverse climate change and should be avoided at all costs," according to the multinational consortium that pioneered this new form of combustion.
The new technology involves preheating the combustion air to over 700*C and then injecting it at "hyper velocity" into a proprietary tungsten/ceramic chamber where the burn actually takes place. Combustion is so efficient that the heat generated by the process is actually used to power an on board steam driven compressor that develops the 250psi air pressure needed to effect the ultra high temperatures created.
In a graphic example of how well it works, this reporter was shown a test report where air from Beijing, China was passed through the combustion chamber and tested. The exhaust air contained less contaminants than the air from the Chinese city's streets by a factor of 9x.
DOE personnel highlighted the fact that effective immediately, $6,000 energy tax credits will be available for anyone purchasing one of these boilers when they hit the market later this year. " (No unit cost information was available at press time)
It was also stated that this new technology would be shared across the industry and that all manufacturers will be required to use it in their respective products with no exceptions. All other forms of combustion technology will be banned within 90 days and existing gas, oil and wood burning equipment must be taken out of use by December 31st 2012.
A government program is "in the works", according to an deputy secretary to the DOE director, "that will reimburse consumers who have existing fuel burning appliances of any type, up to a maximum of $15,000".
The DOE secretary also said that this technology would be, "applicable to many other forms of energy using devices and mechanisms and we expect to phase out fossil fuel use by the year 2045".
