Another Inspection Question

Question..(i did search the forums and didnt find an exact answer)

We got our insert installed, and we need to extend the hearth. We want to get a hearth pad (not carpet) that'll rest on the rug in front of the stove. The hearth steps down on to the floor of the living room. We want to get an extender that we can put away when the burning season is over. The few people we've talked to says that'll pass inspection and that the extension doesn't have to be permanent. Does anyone here (especially those that live in CT) know this to be true as well?

Is it even possible to build something that meets the required R-factor for your insert that you can simply "roll-up" and store away? Assuming you build it, you have to put some sort of non-combustible sealer where the hearth meets the extended hearth. Did your installer add the metal strip that is supposed to overlap both hearth and extended hearth? Even so, how do you guarantee that it does not move...allowing some toasty embers to fall in the crack between it and the hearth? I personally would never take the risk you are taking.....

18 inches from where the door opens on your stove, yes you can use those removable ones. We had to get one when we got our's inspected. West of Hartford.

Kev - there are no guarentees with anything. You do the best you can to ensure youre safe and you do everything possible to ensure that...the chance that an ember rolls off the hearth and then backwards under the lip of the hearth to where the hearth mat meets the step up to the hearth are minimal. I'd think you could open the door of your stove and have sparks from the wood - shoot out way past the hearth....How are you protecting yourself from that?

You can NEVER be too safe!

BTW....Did your unit come with two long 3" metal strips? If so....use them. These are to be placed overlapping 1 1/2" under unit (and 1 1/2 under your extended hearth. This is required to protect against anything (HOT) falling into the "seam" between hearth and extended hearth that could otherwise burn your floor.

Came with no strips. The hearth is a good 8 inches off the floor. From the glass of the stove to the edge of the hearth is 12 inches. The hearth extender sits on the floor in front of the step up to the hearth. I needed an additional 8 inches for code...i added 24 with the extender. Again - there is a lip on the hearth and the extender goes up against it. Once I start my 1st breakin fire I'll post a pic.

Depends on the particular insert manufacturers R &/or K values required, and if the pad meets them.
