Use to use a form of them when burning straight corn early in my burning history. Moved on to something more aggressive and probably more hazardous for greenhorns. But,my hobby is on the top of the list for being unforgiving.
Mag needs no torch, a spark will do. I carry a emergency fire starter in my winter kit.
I think we are trying to give a safer options for those less pyro inclined. I might use rocket fuel to light my stove but I do not think I would generally recommend it. Having served 15 years on a fire dept. and I have seen some good ideas go bad. Things like vapor points, ignition temps, chemical reactions, etc.,etc.. can all change when enclosed in a little steel box.
Actually the charcoal lighter fluid is less volatile but retains the flame longer than the gelled alcohol. I`ve used it many times. You have to hold the match for a second or two till it catches.Polliwog, I agree it starts better and faster and you seem to have a firm grasp of the danger. But, for the less learned it can be very hazardous. Fire safety was last week,did you all check your smoke and CO detectors?
