Free wood about 25 minutes from me. Looks like it could be Norway maple but hard to tell. Second guess is ash. Any other thoughts?

Ash by me which is not far from you has been dead for so long it’s mostly barkless by now. Has your area been hammered by the EAB back a few years ago?

Yes we have been hit by the EAB, but there are still some ash trees around. A lot of what I see still has bark on them.

It’s tough to distinguish ash and Norway maple some times without leaves. Either way this seems like good firewood. Just was curious what others thought.

If the leaves in the photos are from that tree I will say ash, but the clarity isn’t great. Norway maple has very large leaves, those look more like ash leaves to me. The bark isn’t a match for silver maple, and the wood is too white for silver maple IMO

Yea the photos leave a bit to be desired, should be good firewood either way. Let us know what you find!
