My stove was burning super hot all morning and I could only add one log at a time to keep from going over temp. My ideal temp. range is 400-600. I never got over 600. I finally realized that the ash pan door was not locked in and only slightly opened. Is my stove going to be okay? I kept thinking it was the wind because it is really windy here today but I knew something was off cause I've never had this problem. Too bad it took me so long to realize the problem.
Ash pan door open for three hours! Am I ruined?

I think it will be OK....you adjusted to the stove by adding less wood.
Now if you stoked it up like a locomotive going uphill, then I might worry......even then, most damage would be confined to the liners or baffle plate.

If you contained it under 700 degrees You are ok noything to worry about. Once cas tiron substains 800 degrees and over and extended period of time I might be concerned
Remember the fire box temps are a lot hotter than the surface temp
Deap breath damper it down close all inlet air and watch the thermo. once it gets back to 500 -600 range then add a few splits
open the damper a few minutes to get them going them clost it and regulate your inlet air.

When the fire has completely died out, clean out the ashes and check the grate carefully for any cracks. I expect you'll be ok as the temps were kept reasonable. This happened to me once, for about an hour, with no ill effect.
Sorry to tell you, but you have completely ruined your stove. It is now 100% worthless. Please PM me your address, and I will do you a favor by picking up your now-worthless stove ;-P

very funny! i checked the grate and everything seems fine. i guess nothing bad happened and i learned a good lesson about what could be wrong when the fire is burning too hot. i'm just glad i didn't load the thing up. i would have had to run some logs out into the yard and spray them with the hose.
