I would like to convert a big shop vac into a hot red ash vac by diverting the air/ash intake to the bottom of the reservoir which will have about 2 - gallons of water in it. This will make the ash go through 2 - gallons of water before reaching the water's surface. I will also need to line the reservoir with sheet metal and buy a metal vacuum hose. Is this a crazy idea?

Not crazy, but do you mean the exhaust? If the air intake is under water it is going to suck the water into the vac. I think Mo Heat did this and posted a picture of it a couple years ago.

edit: found it:

There are two ends to the intake hose. I think he meant the other end of it like a hookah pipe.
