Im just hoping it was major operator or installer error and very. very rare. Glad they're ok. Reading between the lines, I'm wondering if the fact she had 'just stepped out' and left the stove might be a bit of a clue as to what might have happened...

If this is the same as I read about awhile back it was caused by a grenade (WWl/WWll) that the tree had grown around. This must have been a early report.

Slow day in Scotland!!
60 lb stove causing all that mayhem, quite unusual more like a grow op burning out. Glad no one was hurt.

I'm betting there was an old "Back boiler" water heater built into the original fireplace which had been sealed off. They used to be common in houses built in the 1950s in the UK.

You're dead right.... Just found this -

And it turns out not to be a woodstove at all.. Explains the 60lbs.

Yes... Lots of old back boilers over here. We have the remains of a cast iron one in the stone wall behind our stove, they couldn't get it out without taking down the wall, so the solution was to angle grind a huge section out the middle of it, so it's no longer airtight, just two lumps of iron really. It was pretty thick iron, used up a few grinders....

Fiona a slow day in Scotland is a good day. I just got back from 10 days in Glasgow visiting family .they don't burn wood and think it is really weird. Your articles from the papers are interesting and shows me that people in the UK are getting away from their rural routes which is unfortunate.

I frequently read posts of firewood theft where people suggest placing explosives into the split. This was the first thing I thought of. I'm happy that wasn't the case here.

When I see a headline with stove and house blown up the first thing I think of is steam.

So glad that there weren't serious injuries. It could have been much worse.
