I'm considering getting a new fireplace insert within the next year or two. I was thinking about getting a Jotul
Brand. Has anyone had problems with these? I currently own a small Buck Stove insert that is about 30 years old.
I use the insert to heat the first floor of my small cape cod. What are some of the best ones out there that can keep the house
Warm longer than several hours before loading? Thanks for your advice!

If you want long burn times you'll want a larger firebox. Inserts are limited to the size of the fireplace they they are inserted into. Before we give you suggestions it will be helpful for you to give is some measurements. Can you access the existing fireplace behind you insert to measure it? What is the square footage you're looking to heat? There are a lot of great inserts out there. Jotuls are beloved around here.

It is about 42" wide & 30" tall. The firebox is about 20" wide & a depth of 12 1/2". It is not a big insert.

Is this a prefab ZC fireplace? Not many inserts are going to fit into that tiny space. You would do better to install a freestanding cat stove in front of it connected to a liner or replace the fireplace. I'm thinking a Woodstock Keystone here.

I wish I would have bought the Keystone. I just didn't have the $$ at the time when I got the old Buck. I'm divorced
Now, so I've got some extra cash to play with! Lol! I would have to get a hearth mat to put it on. I just
Had a liner put in last year. Hmmmmm? Getting me thinking here!

Beagler I may be reading this wrong but the firebox dimensions you posted are of the fireplace or the insert?

The first dimensions are on the outside of the insert....the other is inside the firebox. if that helps.

This is inside of the insert...not the fireplace. Sorry for any confusion.

Got it. I thought so. At 30 high and 42 wide sounds like you get most inserts in there. What is the depth of the fireplace? These numbers will determine what inserts you can fit in there. Do you know approximate square footage of the area you want to heat? That will determine the size firebox you'll want.

The firebox is about 20†wide & a depth of 12 1/2â€. It is not a big insert...

This is not a big fireplace.

No, the fireplace is not big at all. Probably would have to get the smallest size insert. If I do get
A free standing stove, I do like the Keystone by Woodstock. It's still down the road a bit when I would
Replace my old one. I'm just getting some ideas for when I do. I appreciate everybody's help!
Great bunch of people on this forum! I might try to download a picture on my work computer & you
Can see what it looks like.

Please do because I'm missing something with these numbers. I'm confused???

If the fireplace is 42" wide and 30" high that sounds like a decent sized fireplace, but then you and BG are talking like the fireplace is 20†wide & a depth of 12 1/2â€. The 12 1/2" deep is referring to the firebox of the insert right? and the 42" and 30" are referring to the actual fireplace that the insert is sitting in. Is this right or am I missing something??? What is the depth of the fireplace that the insert is sitting in?

Sorry to ask the same question here but I think I'm going coo coo. Either way a free standing stove sounds nice. Is the fireplace fully masonry?

BTW this forum is full of good people. You're right. BG at the top of 'em.

He would come in handy getting a wood stove up to my porch! Lol
My fireplace is stone with a tile strip in the front. I'll try to have a picture
Tomorrow.

Looking at your pictures, I'm guessing you were a wrestler back in the 80's...correct? Do you miss the
Glitter or do you like staying under the radar now that you're out of wrestling?
