Getting too old to climb up to the top of the chimney very often, so I thought I'd try a blower into the flue from inside the house and it seemed to do the job with no mess in the house.

Made a "gasket" out of some thick seat cushion foam that was sized to give a tight fit in the flue. I then cut a hole in the center to make a snug air tight fit the blower nozzle. The pics show the rest. My wife watched from outside and said a good amount of ash dust came out. Make sure the cleanout is shut tight. This could likely be done on other sizes of piping or flues as well.
