Boring bugs

I saw a pile of saw dust on my steps the other day and was confused... it looks almost like a drill bit did it. a friend being funny? NSA tapping for cameras?

or do i have bugs? and if so, what would do this?!

i stick a screw driver in, and nothing flew out :shrug:

Big fuzzy bumble bees? Seen very similar from them.
They're pretty interesting though, not too boring at all

Yeah. They love to drill into the window frames on my house. I have to spray bug stuff on the wooden window frames every year when they go to work.

My brother was telling me about them just the other day! Evidently they've done a lot of damage to a good friend's home and he's had trouble with them on the front of his home, too. So far they've managed to miss my home, but odds are they'll find us, too. (he's had a motorcycle for years that isn't loud and obnoxious, BTW).

Get some metal screen and push it in the hole to keep them out. Use a tennis racket to hit them out of the air. Its actually very entertaining.

I do have a TON of bees in my yard. I run a garden, so i'm glad to have them around.

I'm not too up on the different types, or if these are even worth keeping as pollinators.

I do have several other 'combs' hanging in my root pitch (underside).

luckily, this is just on an easily replaceable piece of railing stock. I'll put some wood putty in it and call it a day seeing as it's on the underside.

My parent's have a log house, and have issues with carpenter bees all summer. They've had limited success with traps and spraying, but my siblings that still live there have a lot of fun swatting them with badminton racquets. Dad normally waits until he sees them disappear into a hole and the caulks the hole. Apparently carpenter bees will more of less "give up" when you shut them in their hole.
