So what is "auto" about the fan? Only start up and shut off?

So I do a burn overnight but cant reload. Do I leave it on catalytic or pull it out and run it down on normal?

Yes

Leave the catalyst engaged. There is no harm in doing so.

Why can't you reload in the morning? Too many coals still in the box? Leave the bypass closed; That routes the exhaust through the stove in a longer path, allowing the stove to extract more of the heat.
