Well, it looks like we've decided to go with the 30. Got our building permit today. So we are set to start preparing for the stove to arrive.

I am going to build a hearth. Looks like the 30 requires 1.5 R-value. Having never built a hearth before, input would be appreciated.

If I use metal framing studs, can I count the dead air space? If so, it seems most say it is around .97 r-value. On top of that, I'm thinking one sheet of sheet metal. Then two layers of Durock Next Gen @ .39 each. I plan to ceramic tile/grout the top which is worth .01 or .02 depending what source you look at. So, .97+.39+.39+.01=1.76 r-value, right? Does that sound workable? If there are any reasons not to use or count the air space, I will have to modify that plan. Are there any other problems with my basic plan or things I should be aware of?

Also, the pad is supposed to be 39 x 52.5. My wife would like the corners to be "cut out" like the hearth near the bottom of this page https://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/articles/hearth_design
Would we need to make it bigger to account for that?

The layer of sheet metal in not accomplishing anything. My hearth is metal studs with two layers of durock right on top, then tile of course.
