im still trying to fine tune my burning habits in my lopi freedom insert. im trying to burn down my coals and bring my stove temp down before a reload. ive been bringing my coals to the front and opening the air control all the way. im getting an extra hour or so heat off the coals. seems to be working. my question is, should i open the draft control all the way too?? or would that burn up the coals to quick??

By draft control do you mean the flue bypass? If so, no I don't think that is necessary.

thanks. and yes, i mean flu bypass

Fitter, with our stove, we open the draft full just a little bit before the burn is down to all coals. In other words, that last log is almost ready to fall apart. We do not open the bypass as that would then rob the stove of all that useable heat. This works well in the colder parts of the season because then you will have more coals and they need to burn down to have room to fill back up with wood.

This also can work well for those who burn less than ideally dried wood but they may have to open their drafts sooner. At this stage of the game many ask about losing heat up the chimney. Don't be concerned at this stage about losing heat. You'll get the benefit of most of it and it is a whole lot better to burn those coals than to shovel them into a bucket and carry them outdoors, which is what several folks have reported to do. That is like throwing dollar bills out the door.

I've been running my fan around a medium setting. I try to burn down my coals all the way, and try to reload before the fan automatically shuts off and there is enough coals for an easy relight. .I think the auto t-stat shuts the fan at 250. Should I reload sooner or am I doing the rite thing??

Sounds about right to me, or that's how I run my stove anyway.
