Capping gas line: in firebox or under house?

Masonry fireplace has vented gas logs. I'm installing a wood insert. The logs are fed by a copper gas line that comes through the back of the firebox. It goes to a valve and then to the pilot assembly for the logs. The forward end of this valve would be right at the back of the insert. Do I shut that valve off and cap it there or do I need to shut off gas to the house and cap the line in the crawlspace right near where it splits off to go to fireplace?

Good plan. The farther back, the better.

As mentioned it gets capped at the branch tee or the manifold.
