Chaps (safety gear)

I took advantage of the 'Black Friday' discount yesterday and the low exchange rate ($1=84yen!) and ordered some chaps from Labonville:

The question now is how long they will take to arrive. Parcels from the UK take around a week. From the US...hmmm...will have to wait and see.

BTW, these chaps were about $52 with the discount. Similar chaps in Japan retail at about $180. Labonville will advise me later of the shipping cost, but it must be cheaper than buying chaps over here.

Hope they arrive before Christmas.

It was 10% discount, which was $5.90. Still waiting for the Email confirmation of shipping costs. I suppose they are all off until Monday morning.

An update.

I received my new chaps in the post a couple of weeks ago now. They are great and I'm using them every time I cut. I had to pay $33 for shipping, which I don't really mind as it would be even more, all told, to buy in Japan. But the company said they would Email me with th e shipping cost - never got an Email! Would have been nice to get some sort of contact.

Anyway, I'm now cutting with Ear defenders, goggles, gloves, chaps and steel-toe-capped shoes. I feel safer now but still am very conscious of the inherent power of the saw.

Question: Do I need to empty the gasoline after each use? I often have a half a tank left and leave in until the next time - perhaps a week later. I assume this is okay and that a longer period without using the saw, say a few months, is when I should empty the saw. I also assume the bar oil can stay in the saw until next time, whenever that will be...

I would say as long as your gas doesn't stay in the tank for months you should be ok. One thing you might try is if your not using the gas up every time you cut, put less gas and run the tank dry till the next time you cut unless its your cold season.

As for the bar oil, as far as I know it can stay in the saw for months and not cause any problems.

Good choice on your chaps, I have the same kind and like them alot.

I would say as long as your gas doesn't stay in the tank for months you should be ok. One thing you might try is if your not using the gas up every time you cut, put less gas and run the tank dry till the next time you cut unless its your cold season.

As for the bar oil, as far as I know it can stay in the saw for months and not cause any problems.

Always fill the tank (both) when you are done.
If you are paranoid and not sure you will be using your saw for say longer than three months add some fuel stabilizer to the jerry can.

I prefer to run any of my equipment dry when storing it for extended periods. Short term it doesn't hurt to leave gas in it...

On bar oil, it may depend on what sort - Dino oil doesn't seem to cause any problems, but my Dolmar manual has a caution in it about the "green" veggie based oils - apparently if the saw is stored for an extended period with the veggie oils, the oil can turn to gum and clog up the oil lines, pump, etc... The manual strongly recommended that if storing the saw for more than 30 days or so, one should drain the veggie oil, and run enough dino-juice through to flush out the oil system...
