Hi,

I am looking to replace my current zc (Selkirk 640/zc40) with the Hearthstone wfp 75. The Hearthstone specs a 6 inch chimney. How to i measure the current chimney on my current ZC? I don't have direct access to the pipe itself unless i get my 32 foot ladder out. The actual exit from inside the fireplace measures 8 inches in diameter. Does this mean i have an 8 inch chimney? Multiple sources online seem to indicate that this unit should have a 6 inch pipe. Would the firebox exit at 8 inches reduce to a 6 inch pipe? That doesn't feel quite right to me...

So i just realized i could open the flue and peak directly up the chimney. It definitly reduces the ID (though i can't reach to measure it). So I presume it's safe to say this is a 6 inch ID pipe.

Your chimney pipe also needs to be specified for use with the new fireplace. Just the right size is not enough

It looks like there is a chance that the existing chimney pipe will work. It will be necessary to identify the exact brand/model of chimney pipe and to verify that it is still in very good condition. There may be a label still on the pipe inside the chase. The Selkirk fireplace required Supervent's (Model SC, JM, & ALT) or Selkirk's Metalbestos(Model SS, & CF) chimney pipe. The Hearthstone's manual lists some of these as acceptable for the fireplace. If there is a good match, a new anchor plate may be required.

Piping is in very good condition as this was hardly used (never by us in the last 13 years) and rarely by the previous owners/renters since install in 2002ish. Pipe exit looks identical to the piping used on our oil boiler, which has a Metalbestos Model SS II label on it. I will get up on the roof tomorrow to confirm identical exit style. From the ground it looks like i might be lucky and there could be a sticker still on the fireplace chimney. Maybe i'll even be able to read it. If the exits are indeed identical is there any reason to believe that these pipes are different? Both are original to the house and installed at the same time.

this is from the WFP manual:

am i screwed? Is it worth calling Hearthstone to see if the Metalbestos SS is sufficient? Why wouldn't it be sufficient?

It's great that the piping is in good condition. It may be ok, but document everything. Visual similarity may not be enough for inspection or insurance purposes. Definitely take a clear picture of any identification labeling.
Would i not be able to transer the existing anchor plate? I assume this is due to the sealant?
Possibly. This would be good to verify with Hearthstone tech support.

Well, the exits are definitely identical, confirmed visually. The label up top is long ago worn off, but everything appears identical.

That said, I put my hands on it and it moves around inside its opening at least 1 inch or so in all directions. I presume I should open up the chase and support it better anyway.

If the chase is greater than one story tall, check to make sure they put a firestop in at the 1 story level.

used some basic photo editing. If you look closely this label does indeed say Metalbestos. I can't make out mich more than this.

I will check the firestop as this chase rises two and a half stories. That said the interior space it is adjacent to is a double-height open room. I still plan on opening up the wall to check on the firestop...seems like a reasonable thing. Would the firestop be sufficient to brace this thing or should install bracing further up?

It should be braced more. It should not be moving
