We are looking to buy and install a Quadra-Fire 3100 (Step-Up or Millennium).
The product has its own diagrams for clearance, ranging from 12" to 18". Our insurance company cited NFPA 211 and basically said it has to be 36" from a basic wall. And of course there are many notes and tables about various kinds of wall coverings we can install to reduce this clearance.
Contrasting these official numbers, I see woodstoves installed in the homes of friends & family, and they are nowhere near 36" from the wall. My parents have a stove larger than the 3100 installed at a 45 degree angle, in a corner, with the corners of the stove 11 inches from unshielded walls. Basically just sheetrock painted. In addition, most of the gallery images related to these products found in Google Images show the stoves anywhere from 6" to 18" from a basic wall, no coverings, angled or otherwise.
We are unsure of how to proceed. Ideally we would like to avoid any kind of bulky/ugly wall coverings (like others seem to avoid), but we don't want to burn the house down or lose our insurance either.
Your thoughts?
