On a Wintry Night

The North Wind sliced my comfort clean away
Relentless in his gashing of my day
He scoured ev'ry corner that he turned
So frigidly and cold and unconcerned

"North Wind!" I cried "Why are you so severe?
Do you have no compassion for us here?"
He turned to speak, and I was shocked to hear
A woman's voice, so soft and kind and clear.

"Young man," she said "My purpose is to bring
Some pain and cold and bite to everything
Condemned to carry anguish from the Pole
Believe me, friend, I did not seek this role."

"First, yes, I bring this cold into your day
And, no, you cannot stop me anyway
But as you're touched by me, I'm touched by you
Affected by the things you people do."

"And when I strike my blows from skies above you
You gather in your homes with those who love you
I see this care, and I want you to know
The love you share, it warms me from below."

"This warmth, it dulls the impact of my wrath
On neighbors in the next house on my path
And when your gatherings are oft repeated
My chill is incrementally defeated."

Remember this, when North Winds coldly blow
You're connected, friend, in ways you may not know.

I like it.
